ELLA (A-YAH)

A B O U T

Ella(a-yah) is an exploration of choreographer Talia Moreta’s Dominican heritage generated through Dominican Folklore and contemporary Modern dance. Investigating various aspects within the Dominican culture, Moreta zooms into the dance and music of her ancestors. Contemporary dance and folklore come together to question issues of race, acts of celebration, and socio-political conflicts created by a tumultuous Dominican government. The work is inspired by Moreta’s Great Grandmother (Casandra Damiron), a performer in the 40’s whose dancing appropriated Dominican culture for mass consumption. Moreta draws imagery from the memories of Casandra and her own dancers, as well as gestures that were picked up from her family and Dominican pop-culture.
